The tour begins as we pick you up from your hotel and travel 1.5 hours to Las Maravillas Cave, the West Indies first natural museum of Rupestrian artwork, located inside a 100,000 year old cave.
Visitors will have a chance to learn about the cave's extraordinary geological formations and the history of the pictographs left by the native Taino Indians that lived here before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
Next, we'll drive 30 minutes to Altos de Chavon, an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River, it is a magical and touristic town, with craft ateliers and small production centers where trained local artisans execute ceramic, silk-screen, and woven-fiber products. These works are at once respectful of the island’s history yet boldly international in design concept and quality.
From the lively clay apothecary jars to the brightly colored tapestries found in traditional Dominican houses, the craft ateliers keep the richness of island myth, folklore, and handcrafted expression very much alive. The posters, note cards, and printed T-shirts produced by the silk-screen workshop are among the most authentic in the Caribbean.
Today, this amazing village is the site of many fine restaurants, boutiques, museums, a 5,000 people amphitheater, and the Altos de Chavon School of Design affiliated with Parson´s School of Design in New York.
